Points on Growing Peonies
- Peonies are deciduous plants. They need a good rest with winter temperature below 12 degrees Celsius.
- Plant in a spot with no more than half shades.
- Peonies grow best in fertile, well-aerated and well-drained soil.
- Plant at least one metre apart.
- Plant deep with joint or graft union at least 15cm below ground.
- Water thoroughly but infrequently. One good soaking in every three summer-days is sufficient.
- To grow in a pot, the pot should be sheltered from hot dry winds.
- Apply fertiliser such as bone meal in the early spring.
- Spraying both the plant and ground with Bordeaux mixture regularly controls diseases.
- Cut all the leaves and also the drying stems just at the top of a growth bud in mid-autumn.
